Week 4 (Session 1): Saturday Annex Room Lion (Shi Zi) Group

Leo and Morley were in my group, we used dollhouse and pizza toy during the activity time. I taught them names of furniture, and Leo could copy all the name of them, such as lamp/台灯 (Tái dēng), bed/ (chuáng) . Because Leo and Morley are the oldest children in the whole group, I gave them Chinese character (human/rén) to practice as well.

See you next week!

Craft Room Monkey (Hou zi) Group

Session 1

Hi, Mandarin Stars!

Today I was with Monkey (Hou Zi) Group and I had Katie, Nicole, Jade and Zachary with me.

At the group self-introduction, Katie and Nicole could say, “My name is …” very clearly in Mandarin. During the group flashcards review time, Katie, Nicole and Jade were able to speak the three words on flashcards and Zachary was able to pick up the flashcard for “ball” when asked to do so. Well done, kids! Zachary impressed me a lot today by singing our welcome song in Mandarin. I could hear him singing, “yi, er, san,…” it was something to be proud of by this little boy.

A set of medical-equipment toys was prepared for the activity. I put two teddy bears on the table and asked the kids to play the doctors’ role. All of them enjoyed it very much. We had Kayla join us during this session. When I said “da zhen” – to inject, Katie repeated me and put the needle on my arm. How lovely it was! Nicole put the tonometer around my arm and then pressed it; for that moment, she was a very cute professional doctor. I kept saying the relevant words, such as patient, needle, stethophone, inject, etc. To my surprise, Katie and Nicole were able to repeat what I had said. It was really impressive.

For the craft part, writing your own Chinese numbers was prepared. Katie, Nicole, Zachary and Jade were all able to copy the numbers in Chinese characters. I understood that it was difficult to write in Chinese characters, however, Katie did such a good job that she copied from one to four and then wrote her own one to three in Chinese characters.

See you all next week.

Session 2

The Monkey Group had Aidan, Marina, Madison, Evan and Nick with us today.

During the flashcard review time, these young Mandarin Stars impressed me a lot by speaking out all the words on the flashcards. Good job, kids!

Paper painting and a set of medical-equipment toys were prepared for the activity. The paper painting was to ask the kids to fill in the color for the little star on the paper. It reinforced the vocabulary for the colors. All of the kids were able to ask for the color they wanted to fill in the stars in Mandarin. Evan, Madison, Aidan and Marina were even able to ask for the color by saying, “qing gei wo …”-please give me… When I said, “twinkle, twinkle, little star”, Marina and Madison pointed at the little stars on their paper, which demonstrated their understanding of the word. For the medical equipment, I kept saying the relevant words, such as patient, needle, stethophone, inject, etc. Marina, Madison and Evan repeated me when playing with the toys.

During the craft time, the kids were asked to copy the Chinese numbers and then write their own ones. Everyone did very well, and Marina surprised me by her excellent work. She was able to write -four in Chinese. Well done, Marina!

See you next week.
