Friday 29 May 2009 (Week 5 Term 2) at Chatswood
Craft Room Shi Zi (Lion) Group
Session 1
Hi, Mandarin Stars!
Today I was with Lion (Shi Zi) Group and I had Riley and Adrian with me.
During the snack time, Shui-ling and Ethan were with me. Both of them impressed me by asking for fruits they liked in Mandarin. Ethan said Xie Xie in a very loud, clear and beautiful way whenever I served him some fruit.
At the group self-introduction, both Riley and Adrian could say, “My name is …” in Mandarin and were rewarded with stickers. During the group flashcards review time, both Riley and Adrian were able to speak the three words on flashcards. Well done, kids!
The children were asked to copy and write numbers in Chinese. Both Riley and Adrian copied the Chinese characters of three and four and wrote them on the paper.
A set of medical-equipment toys was prepared for the activity. I put two teddy bears on the table and asked the children to play the doctors’ role. All of them enjoyed it very much. I kept saying the relevant words, such as patient, needle, stethophone, inject, etc. To my surprise, both Riley and Adrian were able to repeat what I had said and followed my instructions. It was really impressive.
For the craft part, we made a hat today. Both Riley and Adrian made very beautiful hats. They draw eyes, nose, and mouth as asked to do in Mandarin. That was lovely.
See you all next week.

Craft Room Shi Zi (Lion) Group
Session 2
The Lion Group had Aidan, Marina, Cartin, Liye and Kate with us today.
During the flashcard review time, these young Mandarin Stars impressed me a lot by speaking out all the words on the flashcards. Among them, Cartin did a great job by saying the words perfectly. Good job, kids!
The children were asked to copy and write numbers in Chinese. All of the kids, Aidan, Marina, Cartin, Liye and Kate, could do as asked to. Marina did such a good job by copying the numbers in Mandarin Chinese and she enjoyed it very much. Aidan counted from one to seven in Mandarin, which really surprised me greatly because he pronounced these numbers perfectly in a very Chinese way. I was very proud of these smart and cute Mandarin Stars.
We made a hat as today’s craft. I reinforced the words for eyes, nose and mouth in Mandarin by doing this craft and the kids did it very well.
See you next week.

Friday Craft Room: Week 5 Monkey (Hou zi) Group
Session One
We had Katie, Nicole and Oliver in our monkey group. Nicole and Katie were very good at repeating what I taught them while reviewing the flashcards related to the topic “it’s sunny”, including “tai yang” (sun), “mao zi” (hat)” etc. Oliver also carefully observed me when I said “yan jing (glasses)”. They really enjoyed the craft we made and Nicole said “yan jing (eyes)” in Mandarin when she asked the plastic eyes to stick on the paper and Katie said “xing xing (stars)” that were used on her works during the craft time. Thanks for your cooperation, dear children.
See you next week!

Session Two
Jayden, Holly, Caicai, Madison and Kate were in our monkey group. I used up all my stickers because they spoke all words on the flashcards very quickly. Then I asked them “how many stickers do you have?”, All five children counted the stickers on their hands with me. Jayden did a great job while writing the Chinese character “san (three) and si (four)” because he completed all words on the paper. Other four girls nearly finished writing as well and they told me their favourite colour in Mandarin when they asked the pens from me, such as “fen hong se (pink), lan se (blue) and huang se (yellow)”.
Thank you lovely children, see you next week!
