Saturday 30 May 2009 (Week 5 Term 2) at Chatswood

Craft Room Shi Zi (Lion) Group

Session 1

I had Shireen, Audrey, Lindsay and Lily with me today at the Lion group.

The girls did very well by introducing themselves to me at the self-introduction part.  Shireen, Lindsay and Lily were able to speak the new words on the flashcards and then rewarded with stickers. Audrey was only with us for a short period of time but she could distinguish the images on the flashcards. For instance, when I asked her to pick up the card for SUN from three flashcards, she was able to do so. Well done, Audrey. Lily was amazing by saying the words perfectly in Mandarin although it was the first time for her to learn the six words.

The kids were asked to copy and write numbers in Chinese. All of the kids copied the Chinese characters, five and six, and wrote them on the paper.

A set of medical-equipment toys was prepared for the activity. I put two teddy bears on the table and asked the children to play the doctor’s role. All of them enjoyed it very much. I kept saying the relevant words, such as patient, needle, stethophone, inject, etc. Lily, Lindsay and Shireen were able to say,” please give me… ” In Mandarin for the toys they wanted to have. Audrey enjoyed playing the doctor’s role and when asked to inject her mum, she did so which suggested that she could comprehend the messages in Mandarin.

For the craft part, we made a hat today. All of the girls made very beautiful hats. They draw eyes, nose, and mouth as asked to do in Mandarin. That was lovely.

See you next week.

Craft Room Shi Zi (Lion) Group

Session 2

The Lion Group had Alex, Sarah, Kristy and Bella with us today.

During the flashcard review time, these young Mandarin Stars impressed me a lot by speaking out all the words on the flashcards. Among them, Kristy and Sarah were doing a great job by saying the words perfectly. Good job, kids!

The kids were asked to copy and write numbers in Chinese. All of them, Alex, Sarah, Kristy and Bella, could do as asked to. Bella did such a good job by copying the numbers in Mandarin Chinese and she enjoyed it very much. So did Sarah, Kristy and Alex. Bella and Sarah counted from one to six in Mandarin, which really surprised me greatly.  I was very proud of these smart and cute Mandarin Stars.

A set of medical-equipment toys was prepared for the activity. I put two teddy bears on the table and asked the kids to play the doctor’s role. All of them enjoyed it very much. I kept saying the relevant words, such as patient, needle, stethophone, inject, etc. Bella was a really professional doctor by putting measuring my temperature and then injected me. She repeated the names of the medical equipments in Mandarin while doing so. Sarah, Kristy and Alex were able to say almost all the words for the equipments.

We made a hat as today’s craft. I reinforced the words for eyes, nose and mouth in Mandarin by doing this craft and the kids did it very well.

See you next week!

Session 1

The Mandarin Stars Panda group performed very well in today’s activities. I have Emily Ng, Sarah, Camille, Alysha and Rohan in my Panda group. We did self-introduction and flash cards review together. Most the children could say the flash cards in Mandarin correctly and they were rewarded with stickers. We also learned how to write the number “1” and they did very well in this writing session. During the beads and thread activity, I reinforced words of colours such as red, blue, yellow, orange and green. All of the children seemed to enjoy this activity very much. The craft for today was to make hats. They tried to draw smiling faces and decorated the hats with shining stars and bows. Well done!
