Test Centre FAQ
HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì / 汉语水平考试) is the internationally recognised Chinese language proficiency test for non-native speakers. Whether you are learning Mandarin for personal growth, academic study or career development, the HSK provides an internationally recognised benchmark of your Chinese language proficiency.
HSK results are widely accepted by universities, educational institutions and employers around the world. They may be used to support applications for higher education in China, scholarships, exchange programs, or employment opportunities where Chinese language skills are an advantage.
The current HSK 2.0 framework consists of six levels (HSK Levels 1–6), assessing listening, reading and writing skills. Each level represents progressively higher language proficiency, enabling learners to set clear goals and track their progress.
Chinese Testing International is progressively introducing the new HSK 3.0 framework, which expands the proficiency scale and places greater emphasis on practical language use and real-world communication. Mandarin Stars is preparing to roll out HSK 3.0 examinations in the coming months, with further updates to be announced as they become available.
Whether you are preparing for further study, advancing your career, or simply looking to achieve an internationally recognised qualification, the HSK provides a valuable milestone in your Mandarin learning journey.
YCT (Youth Chinese Test / 青少年汉语考试) is an internationally recognised Chinese language proficiency test designed specifically for primary and secondary school students learning Mandarin as a second language. It provides a fun, age-appropriate and meaningful way for young learners to measure their progress, celebrate their achievements, and build confidence in their Mandarin learning journey.
The written YCT consists of four progressive levels, allowing students to advance at a pace that matches their language development:
- YCT Level 1 – approximately 80 words
- YCT Level 2 – approximately 150 words
- YCT Level 3 – approximately 300 words
- YCT Level 4 – approximately 600 words
Upon successful completion, students receive an internationally recognised certificate issued by Chinese Testing International (CTI), providing a valuable benchmark of their Chinese language proficiency and encouraging continued learning.
Taking an internationally recognised Chinese proficiency test provides a meaningful way to measure and celebrate your Mandarin learning progress. It helps students set clear learning goals, build confidence, and receive official recognition of their language abilities.
For young learners, tests such as the YCT provide an encouraging milestone that motivates continued learning and helps students recognise their achievements. For older students and adult learners, qualifications such as HSK and BCT can support future study opportunities, scholarship applications, career development and demonstrate Chinese language skills to educational institutions and employers.
Whether you are learning Mandarin for personal interest, academic goals or professional development, achieving a recognised Chinese proficiency certificate can be a valuable step in your language journey.
No. Our test sessions are open to all students learning Mandarin, regardless of where they study. We welcome students from schools, community language programs and private tuition settings. Parents, teachers and schools are encouraged to contact us to discuss suitable test options for their children or students.
The most appropriate test level depends on the student’s Mandarin proficiency, learning experience and familiarity with the language. We recommend first consulting your child’s Chinese language teacher, as they will have the best understanding of your child’s current ability and can advise on the most suitable test level.
If you are not currently enrolled in a school or community language program, or if you would like further guidance, our team will be happy to provide recommendations based on the student’s background and language experience.
Our upcoming Chinese proficiency test sessions are:
- HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test): Saturday, 7 November 2026
- YCT (Youth Chinese Test): Sunday, 22 November 2026
Registration details, available test levels and session times will be published prior to each test session. We recommend checking this page regularly for the latest updates or contacting our team for more information.
Test results are generally available one month after the examination date. Candidates will be notified once results have been released and can access their official results through the testing system.
